Abstract

Purpose: This study was done to identify physical and psychological functions of pre- & post-menopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis and relations of the functions.

Method: The subjects were consisted of the total 50 women with rheumatoid arthritis patients who had been visited in outpatient clinic of C university hospital and J. Rhematism clinic in Gwangju during one month in Jan. 2005. The data were collected by structured questionnaires using interviews. ADL Assessment Questionnaires developed by Lee et al.(in press), and modified from Katz scale(Katz et aI., 1970) and Bathel Index(Bathel, 1973); Multidimensional Health Assesment Questionnaire translated by Lee et al.(2006) & modified from Theodore et al(1999); Sementic Differential Scale, physical meaning assessment instrument developed by Osgood(1957); general self-efficacy questionnaires translated by Kim(1994) & modified from Sherer & Maddux(1982); CES-D scale translated by Choi(1996) & modified from Radloff(1977). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, & Pearson's correlation coefficients using SPSS Programs.

Result: The lower economic group and the group having admission experience caused by rheumatoid arthritis were significantly high in ADL disorder(F=11.69, p<.001), and the less educated group and the group having admission experience caused by rheumatoid arthritis were significantly negative in health problem recognition(t=-2.87, p=.006). Although ADL and self-efficacy in post-menopausal women were less than those in pre-menopausal women, there were no significant(t=-1.42, p=.162; t=- .77, p=.446). Depression was strong positively associated with pain, negative health status, ADL disorder, and recognized health problem, and also negatively associated with self -efficacy.

Conclusion: It is suggested that body images and depression should be managed to improve health status and quality of life and to reinforce psychological function by not only medication treatment but also nursing interventions.
